ENGR-111 Introduction to Engineering

In-Class Work 5: A Common Basis

We do this live in class. Small breakout rooms, about 30 minutes. I’ll tell you the exact time in class. The data is in this spreadsheet.

You’re engineers at a refinery. Three processes are available. Each one produces a different mix of gasoline, kerosene, paraffin wax, asphalt, and diesel, and each product sells at a different price. Your job is to recommend one process.

In your room:

  1. Watch your units. The prices are not all in the same ones
  2. Compute the daily revenue of each process
  3. Pick one and be able to say why
  4. Then name one thing you’d want to know that isn’t in the table, and say how it might change your answer

Each of you submits the group’s answer. Type it into the Moodle submission box:

Grading. Everyone in the group gets the same score. If you do not submit, you get no credit for that session. Grading and the AI policy are in the syllabus. Step 4 is worth as much to me as the arithmetic.
